I would go with one of 2 possibilities, not having it in hand. A greenbrier is a possibility, but it usually has thorns also. A close relative is what we call bind-weed that has black berries in the fall but usually not so long a leaf.
There is a clematis in this area that also has a leafe similar, but will have a nice flower. One variety is Blue or Pink and is bonnet shaped and the other is usually a large vine called clock-vine clematis with big lavender blossoms. Like I say, I would have to see it much more up close. The first two are very drought tolerant (sound familiar?) and the clematis family likes feet in the cool shade and head in the sun.
