Hi Julia -

From the sounds of it you are describing a boxelder (ashleaf maple) though I'm guessing without pictures. There is no "poison ivy tree" so to speak. There is a species of poison ivy called Toxicodendron rydbergii which is a shrub. Left undisturbed for years, it can get to about 10 feet. But it is definitely shrubby.
