Wow Yvonne! I just looked up that plant and it looks like quite a menace. Oyster plant is Rhoeo spathacea (another common name is "man in a boat") I believe. I've found a few sites with pictures and from your description, this plant is it. For those interested, here are a few links about this plant:

This plant is on the list of invasive and banned plants for Miami-Dade County. Propagates too easily and overruns native plants. And of course add to it the dermatitis issue you raised and this is one mean plant!
