Thanks everyone for the responses. I carefully cut out a 12" section of each vine with a handsaw and applied concentrated roundup to the exposed end. The next day I noticed a black, viscous-looking ring of sap around the cut end. Very nasty appearing. This should do them in. I'll let nature do the rest.
